The Stopline is also financially supported by the EU within this programme. The Safer Internet Programme was originally active for a duration of 4 years, from 1999 to 2002. Due to its great success and the efficient work of the supported institutions, the European Parliament renewed the programme several times, currently until 2008.
The programme has several key points:
- the implementation of a European network of hotlines for the reporting of illegal contents
- the promotion of self-regulation
- the development of content rating and filtering software
- measures for the shaping of opinions regarding the safe use of the internet
- new online technologies, especially mobile and broadband transmission of contents, online-games, peer-to-peer data transfer and all areas of real-time communication like Chat and Instant Messaging.
Its main task is to improve the protection of children and young persons. Furthermore, additional fields of activity regarding illegal contents are about to be included, like racism and violence.
Currently negotiations take place about a renewal of the successful project under the title "Safer Internet Plus" until 2010.
